Bicton Park Botanical Gardens

Walking into Bicton is like stepping back in time, the gardens represent 300 years of living history. The Italian Garden, reportedly planted to a design by Versailles landscaper Andre Le Notre, is unusual in its very existence. Many of these formally styled gardens were lost when fashions changed in favour of a more naturalistic design.

The 19th century Palm House is not to be missed. Built as a gift from John Rolle to his young wife Louisa, this elegant glass building predates even the palm house at Kew gardens.

As for the plants themselves, then this garden is truly a horticulturalist’s dream. With 63 acres of landscaped park containing over 1000 trees, and a profusion of rare and exotic plants—many like the orchids and cacti housed in specialist glasshouses— there is always something to see all year round.

With modern amenities, play areas and a train offering scenic rides through the woodland, this is a place to take all the family in any season.
