Bourton House Garden

The garden at Bourton is obviously a reflection of the (just slightly) eccentric owner. Ex-designer Monique, with the assistance of her gardeners Jackie and Paul, has created a garden that juxtaposes formality with contemporary flair. Her love of art is everywhere, exhibited not only in the design of the garden but in the sculptures that complement it. Stained glass structures provide a colourful window between the gardens and the fields beyond, and a gallery of Contemporary Art, Craft and Design is housed in a wonderful sixteenth century tithe barn.

The 3 acre garden provides the ideal setting for Bourton House, a typical example of a Cotswolds manor, its classicism reflected by the combination of precise and imaginative topiary and the colourful herbaceous borders surrounding the main lawn. The rather giggly Jackie specialises in succulents – and a glasshouse is devoted to these weird and wonderful plants.

Need any more reasons to visit? The food is gorgeous, all home made, often with ingredients from the garden’s compact potage. Try the Best Ever Fruit Cake – with a name like that, you can’t go wrong!
