Edited Transcript BBC Gardeners’ Question Time 26/11/07

Chairman, Peter Gibbs: “…all your Christmas presents solved as we continue our review of the best gardening books publishes this year…

This week we turn our attention to the glossy end of the publishing market – but with so many titles being released, how do you choose?  …I began by asking Tim Rumball of Amateur Gardening, what books had caught his eye.”

Tim Rumball: “Well this is an unusual choice this is a soft-back book called the Heart of a Garden by Jess Wynne and it comes with a two DVD film set, both are about gardens in the South West of England. The book is outstanding. It has wonderful photography; Jess Wynne’s commentary on the gardens is really entertaining, very personal, very lively, all sorts of unusual bits and pieces. There are little recipes, there are tips from the gardeners, there’s fascinating detail from all the gardens covered, everything from Tresco Abbey Gardens on the Scilly Isles to Compton Acres in Poole in Dorset, loads of others up to Gloucestershire they go, lots of interesting stuff here. The book is outstanding; the film is terrific fun as well. I plugged the DVDs in and watched it, really entertained, took it back to the office the next day and somebody nicked it, so it must have been good, must have been good!”

Peter Gibbs: “Juliet, this is the start of a project that’s going to cover the whole of the UK apparently in the end. But this was certainly very entertaining.”

Juliet Roberts: “Unfortunately I wasn’t able to see the DVDs, but I thought the book was great. There’s some nice descriptions, lots of background information, and what was really good, there’s lots of personalities, I always think, you know, gardening is about people and there’s some nice lively text in there…overall I think it really got you fired up to go and see those gardens.”

Tim Rumball: “Great fun, good Christmas present!”

Peter Gibbs: “Ok, The Heart of a Garden, by Jess Wynne, that’s priced at £14.99.”
