Abbey House Gardens

Abbey House Gardens are well known for the offbeat thinking of owners, Ian and Barbara Pollard, the so-called ‘naked gardeners’. Refusing to be restrained by orthodox ideas about gardening, and with sheer dedication, the couple have transformed the gardens from a few acres of rough land to the exuberant paradise we see today. And all in a mere ten years! The Don Quixote of horticulture, Ian is a big character and this is reflected by the garden.

The video clips give some idea of the colour sensation that awaits you at Abbey House, but the full version of the film reveals how very varied the gardens are. With the ruins of the 12th century abbey making the ultimate garden folly, the upper part of Abbey House is formal, featuring a Celtic cross knot garden and a fantastic circular colonnade containing raised beds bursting with plants – all with perfumery, herbal or medicinal properties. In complete contrast, the lower garden is a lush wilderness, soul soothing and beloved by wildlife. Boasting, as described by Alan Titchmarsh, “the wow factor in abundance” this is a garden that cries out to be visited time and time again.
