Cothay Manor Gardens

These 12 acres of gardens are the perfect complement to Cothay Manor – considered by many to be the finest small medieval building in the country. The video extracts allude to the dreamy atmosphere of Cothay – the house and gardens surely seem the preserve of fairytales. And we dwell on the dragonfly because we like him; it’s always a privilege to get so close to nature. But what these short clips don’t have time to reveal is the sheer scope of these gardens.

Cothay is in fact made up of seven garden ‘rooms’, each enclosed and distinct from each other and leading off from a 200-yard yew walk. In the complete film we also see a wild garden and a meadow area – covered with an explosion of wildflowers and tulips. Owners Alastair and Mary-Anne Robb explain the history of the garden and its associated with the famous Sissinghurst. The film captures an insight into the couple’s artistic personalities; how they have shaped the garden’s restoration and its very definite ideas about colour, favouring soft, painterly combinations.
