Moreton Gardens

It might be a revelation to learn that this little Dorset village is the final resting place of T. E. Lawrence. His grave, directly behind the gardens, is a big attraction. Lawrence of Arabia was an enigmatic character, and there’s plenty to see at Moreton for those wishing to learn more about him. The complete film features the tearooms, which are filled with Lawrence memorabilia including photos, letters and his coffin trolley, and the church where his funeral was conducted - with its unusual and very beautiful engraved windows.

The gardens themselves are very much at the heart of the community. Their location is an enormous part of their appeal - as the film shows, Moreton is an estate which has been owned solidly by one family since the 1300s. Very little has changed here, and this adds to the village’s charm. The gardens are the ideal place to soak up the atmosphere, their relaxed planting schemes encouraging an array of butterflies to look out for. The wild, lush water garden and hidden enclaves of the wooded area are a pleasing contrast to the formal lines of the pergola and fountain garden.
