Painswick Rococo

Take a look at the video clips for a flavour of what this garden is famous for and why it is so unique. The rococo period was a brief burst of flamboyance in the mid 18th century. With its brightly coloured follies, twisting serpentine paths and contrasting formal vistas, Painswick, in the heart of the Cotswolds, is perhaps the best example of a rococo-styled garden in the UK.

Part of the appeal of rococo is its desire to confound expectations, watching the full version of the film reveals that this is something the garden does very well. The Red House is but one of the follies; there are many buildings to discover hidden amongst this garden, ranging in architectural design from classical to rustic or Gothic. Rococo is associated with frivolity, yet this is a garden that has a practical side – a large kitchen garden is its centre point providing produce for the restaurant. Rococo was once the domain of the aristocracy, but Painswick is a true pleasure garden for everyone of any age. Children enjoy rolling on the lawns or following the nature trails and the garden is full of wildlife – from newts and dragonflies, to deer and squirrels.
